Wedge Pond is screened weekly for Cyanobacteria by The Mystic River Watershed Association using a fluorometer and looking for visual signs of bloom. The Winchester Health Department is alerted of any concerns and issues an advisory based on elevated levels. If necessary will work with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on further pond water analysis.
Blue-green algal blooms
Blue-green algal blooms are a major hazard to water supplies as well as potentially dangerous to human, animal and fish health. Blue-green algae are actually types of bacteria known as Cyanobacteria. They normally look green and sometimes may turn bluish when scums are dying.
’Bloom’ is the term used to describe an accumulation of algal cells to a point where they discolor the water, form scums, produce unpleasant tastes and odors, affect fish populations and reduce the water quality.
