The Drought, Biodiversity and Climate

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

A presentation and discussion on the effects of last year’s drought and how biodiversity loss leads to climate change. Biodiversity loss through unbalanced extraction, production and consumption of natural resources alters ecological functions like the water and carbon cycles. The earth is losing the ability to store and beneficially use water and carbon. Biodiversity loss is comparable to the carbon released by power plants in its effects on climate change. Increased desertification and extreme weather like the recent drought are the results. Join us for a moderated discussion afterwards as we explore different aspects of these issues with representatives of local environmental groups bringing their knowledge and experience from their part of the watershed. Presenters: Andy Hrycyna, Mystic River Watershed Association and Jim Laurie, Biodiversity for a Livable Climate Brought to you by Winchester Farmers Market Community Hub
