  2. Coffee and Books at the Jenks: Ecstasy: A Novel

    This month’s selection is Ecstasy: A Novel by Mary Sharratt. In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a beautiful and magical woman turned the heads of Gustav Klimt, Gustav Mahler, and Walter Gropius. Alma Schindler studied years to become a composer but loses her heart to Gustav Mahler, nearly twenty years her senior. He demands she gives up her music. Ecstasy reveals the true Alma Mahler: composer, author, daughter, sister, mother, wife, lover, muse. Join Ann Wirtanen, Director of the Winchester Public Library, as she leads a discussion to further our understanding of this book.

    No matter who you are, you’re aging. But do you really know what aging means? Is getting old something to fear, or does it offer some surprising benefits not possible to enjoy at younger ages? Join renown gerontologist, Jeanette Leardi for this engaging presentation to discover what aging is – and what it isn’t. Drawing from scientific research and experience, Ms. Leardi addresses negative stereotypes and offers practical ways to disrupt ageism to help all generations to fully contribute to society. Jeanette Leardi, a social gerontologist, writer, editor and community educator, has a master’s degree in English from Rutgers University and graduate certificate in Gerontology from University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Under the guidance of Chef Vittorio Ettore, students prep the school garden, plant 8 varieties of lettuce (like arugula, mizuna, tatsoi), harvest them, and serve their beautiful salads. This after-school program exposes kids to the fundamentals of horticulture. It teaches them to make healthy and happy connections through food and nature, foster a respect for fresh ingredients, and pride in work. And so much digging in dirt! All salad sale proceeds go to the Ambrose School garden and Greens Group program. Please join us for dinner! Reservations recommended.

    Art offers another wonderful opportunity for creative and social connections. We welcome Hilary Celentano as she shares her artistic talents and teaches a new art class and studio. The first hour will focus on a specific topic, starting with pencil sketching. The next two hours will be studio time where students can stay and work on their own projects or participate in a community piece. The first hour costs $3.00 and students provide their own materials. The studio time costs $2.00 and if working on the group project, materials will be provided. Hilary will remain available throughout the studio time for assistance.

  12. Annual Brennan Lecture--Dr. Robert Legvold: The Changing Dynamics of U.S. & Russian Relations

    Dr. Legvold has focused his career on the foreign policies of Russia, Ukraine and the other new states of the former Soviet Union; U.S. relations with the post-Soviet states; and the impact of the post-Soviet region on the international politics of Asia and Europe. Dr. Legvold received his Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1967. He served on the faculty at Tufts, as Senior Fellow and Director of the Soviet Studies Project at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, and the Director of The Harriman Institute, Columbia University. He was project director for “Rethinking U.S. Policy toward Russia” at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences where he is currently co-director of “Meeting the Challenges of a New Nuclear Age". He is also director of the “Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative," and the Marshall D. Shulman Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at Columbia, where he specialized in the international relations of the post-Soviet states.
