Would you like to understand rhythm better and how different cultures use it in their music? Join percussion faculty member Sylvie Zakarian for a virtual rhythm trip around the world! This fun workshop will explore the mathematical nature of rhythm patterns from various cultural regions, with frame drums for everyone to play. In the first part of the workshop, students will start building their rhythm vocabularies by exploring patterns such as dotted values, syncopations, subdivisions, and polyrhythms. In the second part of the workshop, we will put our knowledge to use by playing along with recorded materials that reflect a variety of ethnic traditions throughout the world. No previous drumming experience is necessary! All ages are welcome. Free for WCMS students; $10 for public. For more information or to register, call 781-721-2950 or visit www.winchestermusic.org. 407 Highland Avenue, Winchester.

The Winchester Cooperative Theatre for Children announces its Fall production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! In this award-winning musical adaptation of the classic Dickens' novel ¬Oliver Twist, the streets of Victorian England come to life. Oliver, an impoverished orphan living in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. He escapes to London and meets the Artful Dodger, who welcomes him into his band of young petty thieves led by criminal mastermind Fagan. Oliver is not meant for the criminal life, however, and longs for a home of his own. Will he find true happiness or is he doomed to a life of crime?
